Lean Six Sigma: Helping Businesses to Overcomes Losses

Understanding how the application of Lean Six Sigma can help businesses to overcome losses post coronavirus pandemic.

The world has been under the shadow of coronavirus for almost six months now and it is no secret that the outbreak has ravaged the global economy and made it plunge into losses.

From stock markets to MNC’s, business-men to labourers, all have had a great impact of the virus on their daily lives and has been struggling to meet the ends ever since the world paused.

After months of lockdown’s and stay at home orders, several countries have started to exempt the restrictions to make the markets going again to bridge down the consequent gaps in the economy.

As a result, people are now fighting the virus and also working outside their homes by taking all the precautionary measures to make a living out of this pandemic situation.

Surviving at a time like this and starting everything from the scratch can be a tough task.

Due to the incredible fluid situation all over the world, companies need to constantly monitor the several issues that they are facing because of the ongoing events and assess their possible impacts for the near future and as well as for a longer-term.

Organisations must anticipate the difficulties before they become larger intermediate issues that do not provide them with any benefit.

To achieve effectiveness at a time like this where businesses cannot afford to suffer from losses anymore, strategic planning could be used to set priorities, focus on resources, strengthen operations, ensure employee engagement and accomplish customer satisfaction all at once.

Business methodology, Lean Six Sigma, aims at improving operations by eliminating wastes and unnecessary processes that do not add value to the organisation and the end product.
It is a process improvement methodology designed to eliminate problems, remove waste and inefficiency and improve working conditions to increase the productivity and provide a better response to customer needs.

This team-oriented approach has shown results in maximising efficiency and dramatically improving profitability for businesses around the world.

By eliminating wastes and anticipating problems in advance, one can invest purely in operations that add value to the final product.

This would help in declaring the success of a project where waste and variations are reduced and customer value is enhanced.

Lean Six Sigma is a quality management methodology that measures and analyses processes to provide real and sustainable results. From internal control to energy use, labour to transportation, eliminating waste and improving efficiency, all told areas of operations are streamlined to quality control with no negative effect on customer satisfaction.

Not just this, the application of the programme results in cost deduction as it is applied to inefficient processes. Its practices help in minimising defects and errors within the production processes and also helps in reducing rework that consumes a lot of time and resources without adding any value to the product or service.

Eliminating defects, delays and other deviations from the product or service's target value results in greater customer satisfaction, improved brand loyalty, and increased market share.
This results in overall improvement which in turn increases the productivity and efficiency of an organisation as a whole.

Gaining a Competitive Edge with Lean Six Sigma

Understanding how one can have an added advantage by Lean Six Sigma certification.

The world has become more competitive due to the sudden outbreak of a global pandemic where economies have crashed and are thriving to survive in the market.

Industry experts have come to realise that process control and continuous improvement can be of utmost importance to achieve productivity and reduce cost in a time where sustaining in the market has become a challenge.

Lean Six Sigma methodology is critical to get hold of a competitive advantage as it not just focuses on one aspect of an operation but has a versatile nature that provides a lot of benefits to an organisation.

Lean and Six Sigma tools are best to maximise customer satisfaction and value to an extent which in turn provides a competitive edge to a professional or an organisation by driving rapid improvement processes in several areas.

Lean Six Sigma is a synergised management approach that includes improving processes, gaining efficiencies, solving problems, improving consistency in meeting client’s requirements, and conducting enhanced project management.

According to The American Society of Quality, “Lean Six Sigma is a fact-based, data-driven philosophy of improvement that values defect prevention over defect detection. It drives customer satisfaction and bottom-line results by reducing variation, waste, and cycle time, while promoting the use of work standardisation and flow, thereby creating a competitive advantage. It applies anywhere variation and waste exist, and every employee should be involved.”

In difficult times like these, digital tools are proving to be more vital than ever. Millions of people under lockdown are now turning to digital means to continue with their daily lives. During a pandemic, technology is the only solution that could act as a catalyst to magnify the revenues.

Organisations have already identified virtual reality as a possible tool to not just boost up the uptake of technology but also to improve employee training in this season of work from home. Employee training would help to build up the morale of employees resulting in higher productivity of workers by imparting an additional skill set.

Engaged employees drives innovation and push their organisation forward. They act as a catalyst to change and help to come up with new ideas that would benefit their organisation.

One way candidates can distinguish themselves, highlight their skills and passions, and gain a competitive advantage in a competitive workforce is to become certified in Six Sigma.

Programs like Lean Six Sigma encourages employees to reach their potential by working towards the goals of an organisation and making a way for operational excellence.

Lean Six Sigma and Organisational Development

Understanding how Lean Six Sigma can help to achieve Organisational Development.

Peter Drucker, a well-known management consultant, educator, and author, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation has a very famous saying, What gets measured, gets improved”.

Process Improvement in Organisational Development is nothing but a dynamic task of identifying, analysing and improving upon existing business processes within an organisation to meet quality management, standards and customer satisfaction.

The practitioners of Organisational Development know that to encourage their organisation to change, they need to understand the system and the processes of their operations in depth so that they can make necessary changes in the leadership and cultural behaviour of the entire organisation to attain self sufficiency and productive results.

Bill Smith, an engineer and scientist at Motorola, came up with a process improvement methodology called Six Sigma in1980’s to promote quality that would standardise defect measurement and drive improvements in manufacturing.
Six Sigma approach focuses on identifying the waste that results from variation within the process. According to experts, once the variations are eliminated the results would be precise and would have no deviation in them. It uses DMAIC- Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control: a data-driven improvement cycle that mainly focuses on optimising and stabilising business propagandas and designs.

The five phases of six sigma can be briefed as:
1. Define- In this phase, the boundaries are set and goals are defined to obtain maximum satisfaction of the customers.
2. Measure- In the phase of measure, the current performance of the delivery of products or services are measured to ensure there are no variations occurred.
3. Analyse- The analyse phase of six sigma focuses on identifying the root cause of any business problem during the production process.
4. Improve- In this phase, a solution to the problem is determined and the various formats to implement the changes are identified.
5. Control- The changes in this phase are implemented. Control Phase in DMAIC approach is to ensure that the gains obtained during Improve are maintained long after the project has ended.

Six Sigma Principles are described as:
  • Continuous efforts to achieve stable and predictable process outputs are vital for business success.
  • Operational business processes can be measured, analysed, improved and controlled.
  • Achieving sustained quality improvement requires commitment from the entire organisation, particularly from the top management.
These application of Lean Six Sigma, if adopted in a right way can help an organisation to develop, grow and prosper.
Lean Six Sigma has been a stepping stone in modern times of quality improvement. Thousands of companies around the world have been considering Lean Six Sigma as a way of doing business because it helps in identifying and eliminating waste that do not add any value to the product. This results in improved efficiency, productivity and also cost saving.
